A New Year: 2020 to 2021

2020 Reflection & 2021 Goals

posted in: General 0

This year has been a crazy year for everyone—pandemic, Brexit, Trump vs. Biden, Australian wildfires, and so much more. And yet, what I’ve seen is the resiliency of people and the wave of empathy that has gotten us through some tough times. Though I don’t want to relive 2020 again, some good has come out of the bad: I got to spend quality time with family and friends, my career has flourished, and I was able to achieve some of the goals I had set forth.

Last year’s goals, revisited

One year ago, I posted my 2020 goals. I was fortunate enough to do some of the items on my list.

  1. WWRD Series – Publish at least 1 post per month … FAILED. I was only able to publish one case study (and not even a WWRD) in 2020 (“Clock on TikTok Is Ticking… But That Won’t Stop Its Growth“).
  2. Give back to the marketing community – At least 2X … SUCCEEDED! Not only did I speak at multiple engagements from conferences to colleges to podcasts in 2020, I was also lucky enough to be awarded GDS’ Digital Leader of the Year – Gold (top award).
  3. Start the Renaissance Marketers showcase … SUCCEEDED! I launched RenaissanceMarketer.com and started a YouTube channel in 2020 and I can’t wait to work on it some more in the new year.

2021 Goal: Evangelize “Renaissance Marketer” Concept

I have always believed in the power of Renaissance Marketers, whom I have defined as marketers who can apply multiple disciplines in their marketing activities. This new type of marketer, much like the namesake, are versatile in important business subjects such as customer behavior, product and design, technology, and finance.

We need to recognize these powerful traits and develop them further, so RenaissanceMarketer.com will help make that happen!

In 2021, I want to evangelize this idea and really bring it to the foreground. In order to do so, I plan on hitting these quarterly milestones:

  • Q1: Build the foundations.
    • Build a team. I’ve learned from my previous endeavors that the best way to achieve goals is to have a strong team who can execute on the vision. I will identify and reach out to my network to build a team who can help me hit the rest of my milestones. (Quick plug: if you’re interested in being a part of this team, please contact me directly!)
    • Build out content and marketing plan. Come on, that’s a given! This plan will include how to showcase top Renaissance Marketers via an interview series as well as the development and publication of tools/resources for building Renaissance Marketer skillsets and organizations.
    • Land the first business school or company/organization speaking event. Since the concept is about recognizing and developing the next generation of marketers, what better way than to go to one of the sources: business schools. I want to seed the idea with up & coming marketers. Simultaneously, I want to help companies and organizations build this concept into their learning & development curriculums.
  • Q2: Increase content velocity and subscriber base by creating a regular publication cadence (e.g. video per month and posts per week, interview 2X per month, etc.) and ensuring the content generated is valuable and easily accessible.
  • Q3: Recognized in major circuits like major publications and TED Talk.
  • Q4: Go global. Just like how the Renaissance ideas and learnings have carried over generations and geographies, I want this Renaissance Marketer concept to move across generational and geographical barriers. I haven’t figured out the international plan yet, but I’m hoping my team will be able to help me with that!
